How To Use Bigen Permanent Powder Hair Color

Before Application

Read the instructions provided in the box thoroughly before use. Always complete the 48-hour patch test before EACH USE to make sure you are not allergic to the product.

  1. Make sure to wear suitable gloves. You can find a set included in the product box. Tip: If the gloves are too loose, use rubber bands to tighten them around your wrists.
  2. We recommend removing contact lenses before coloring your hair.
  3. Cover your shoulders with a towel or cape that you do not mind getting stained.
  4. Be sure your hair is clean and free of any product buildup. For this we recommend washing and drying your hair 24 hours before coloring.
  5. To prevent staining on your skin, apply cold cream around your ears, hairline, and the nape of your neck.
  6. Keep a damp paper towel close by. This is to help wipe skin if hair color gets on it!

Getting Ready to Color

  1. Pour Bigen Permanent Powder into a non-metallic or cup. Add room-temperature tap water (DO NOT use hot or boiling water) in the proper measurement specified by the measuring tray found in the box.
  2. Mix gently and well with a brush until the powder has been dissolved and is smooth.

CAUTION: DO NOT mix with other products. The color of the mixture does not indicate the final results.

Application

For full head

  1. Quickly apply the mixture on dry hair. Note: if you have partially gray hair, start application at the area with the most gray.
  2. Comb through the hair to ensure every hair-strand is thoroughly covered with mixture.
  3. Process hair as directed below in development section.

Development

Non-chemically treated hair: 20 - 30 minutes
Chemically treated hair: 15 minutes

Note: Total time of application and development should not exceed 40 minutes to prevent hair color from becoming too dark.
Tip: Check color development several times by wiping a strand of the hair with a cotton ball or paper tissue to adjust your developing time. Once desired color is obtained, proceed to rinsing your hair. Please go to rinse directions for more information.

For re-touch technique

  1. Apply on new growth only. Note: if you have partially gray hair, start re-touch application at the area with the most gray.
  2. Process for:
    Non-chemically treated hair: 20 - 30 minutes.
    Chemically treated hair: 15 minutes.
  3. If necessary, apply mixture on ends during the last 5-10 minutes of the deposit time.
  4. Rinse hair (please go to rinse directions for more information).

Rinse

  1. Rinse hair thoroughly with warm water until water runs clear. Avoid water coming into contact with eyes.
  2. Shampoo and condition hair with a color safe shampoo and conditioner! We suggest Bigen Colorshield Moisture Plus Shampoo and Deep Conditioner to help maintain your fresh color and condition your hair.
  3. Dry and style as desired.

Is Bigen Powder a permanent hair color?

Yes, it is a permanent hair color that features a depositing action only. It does not rub off.

What are the benefits of using Bigen Powder?

  • Easy to use (simply mix with water).
  • Contains no ammonia (Less damage).
  • Very gentle to hair Long lasting, with controlled and predictable results.
  • No harsh odors.
  • Gives hair a smooth, rich and natural look.

What is the purpose of Bigen Powder?

The purpose of Bigen Powder is fourfold: to darken hair, to match or enhance your natural hair color, to permanently and easily cover gray and to restore hair color that has been faded either by sun, chlorine, sea water or chemical processing.

What makes Bigen Powder unique?

Bigen Powder is a leading powdered permanent hair color that does not contain ammonia nor metallic ingredients in its formula.

Who can benefit from Bigen Powder?

Bigen Powder is designed for those who desire dark, rich healthy looking hair and cover gray.

Can men use Bigen Powder?

Yes. Bigen Powder will gently cover gray without drastic changes in your natural color.

Is it okay to color my hair black using Bigen Powder right after using semi-permanent hair color?

Yes, of course. However, if you have previously colored your hair with henna or a color-restorer, you need to wait until your hair has grown out, until these colors fade completely out of your hair, or until your color-treated hair has been cut. Otherwise, the desired results may not be obtained.

How does Bigen Powder compare with semi-permanent colors?

Both products are deposit-only hair colors. However, Bigen’s Permanent Powder Hair Color lasts much longer than the other due to differences in coloring mechanism.

Bigen Permanent Powder is an oxidative dye that deposits color your hair to last at least 20 shampoos. It contains a low level of peroxide to become activated when mixed with water, to ensure that the colorants penetrate the hair without lifting (lightening) away your natural pigments to remain gentle to the hair. Since it will cover both outside of the cuticle as well as bit into the cortex, the product lasts as long as most permanent hair dye products, but with much less damage to the hair.

Semi-Permanent Hair Colors, including Bigen’s, is even less invasive. They usually don’t contain any peroxide, and simply coat the hair. The benefit of this type of product is that it doesn't add more damage to the hair, and can be used over relaxed or bleached hair, even on the same day. The trade-off compared to the Bigen Permanent Powder, is that it will wash off with each shampoo. While specific counts may vary per shade and condition of hair, on average it will maintain colors for about 8 shampoos.

Do I have to do a skin allergy test before application every time I color my hair?

Yes. All permanent hair colors, including Bigen Powder, require a preliminary skin allergy test 48 hours before each use, even if you have been coloring for years without problem.

Your body constitution and condition change every day. Allergic reactions can occur depending on the constitution of the day of use.

If you notice any signs of burning, swelling, redness or irritation on your skin during these 48 hours, do not use the product.

Can I color my eyelashes or eyebrows with this product?

No. This product must not be used for dyeing eyelashes or eyebrows. To do so may cause blindness. Avoid contact with your eyes. If product gets into the eyes, rinse immediately and please consult your physician.

Can I color my beard/mustache with this product?

No. Do not use this product for body hair (besides hair on scalp) or facial hair (such as beard or mustache). To do so may cause irritation or injury. Can I use Bigen Powder for tattoos or body art? No. Do not use this product for tattoos or body art. To do so may cause irritation or an allergic reaction.

How do I select the right color for me?

Always choose the shade that is closest to your own natural color (or 1 to 2 shades lighter) for best results.

Is 6g (0.21 oz.) powder enough to cover all my hair?

With an entire bottle of Bigen Powder and the proper measurement of water (Fill to the "FULL" line of the measuring tray), you can make 2.3 fl oz. of mixture. This amount is good enough to cover from short hair to shoulder-long hair. You may need 2 boxes if you have long hair.

Can I apply Bigen Powder to wet hair?

No. Bigen Powder should be applied only on dry hair. Excessive moisture may increase the risk of dripping, which might get into your eyes. To avoid contact with eyes, do not apply color mixture to wet hair. My hair has excessive hair styling product buildup.

Should I wash my hair before coloring?

You should not wash your hair immediately before coloring. Wait at least 24 hours after shampooing before you apply the color.

Can Bigen Powder be used on chemically treated hair?

Yes. As Bigen Powder is a non-ammonia formula, it gently deposits color. We suggest waiting two weeks between chemical treatments for minimum hair damage.

Can Bigen Powder be used to add depth to previously lightened hair?

Yes. Bigen Powder is excellent for black tint and corrective coloring, to eliminate off tones and cool-down over lightened hair.

What will the results be after using Bigen Powder?

Your hair will be rich and lustrous, with magnificent natural-looking color.

What is the processing time for Bigen Powder?

Non-chemically treated hair
10 min application + 20-30 min developing time: 30-40 min total

Chemically treated hair
10 min application + 15 min developing time: 25 min total

Never exceed a total of 40 minutes application time.

Can I use Bigen Permanent Powder to lighten my hair?

No. Bigen Permanent Powder is not designed to lift your hair color to a lighter shade.

Does Bigen Powder lift and deposit color simultaneously?

No. Bigen Powder has no lifting action. It is a deposit-only color.

Is it necessary to go under a dryer during processing?

No. Using a dryer is not recommended. Use Bigen Powder at room temperature (approximately 68°F to 86°F).

How long does Bigen Powder color last?

Bigen Permanent Powder color lasts approximately 20 shampoos or more, depending on hair condition and lifestyle.

What is the procedure for new growth or retouch application?

Using a tint brush, simply apply Bigen Powder mixture to the new growth.

Sometimes, the color comes out darker than color swatch/samples displayed at stores. Why?

The hair swatches show the coloring result when Bigen Powder is applied to 100% gray hair. Bigen Powder tends to come out darker when applying to black hair because it has no lifting action. We recommend that you select 1 or 2 levels lighter than your original, natural color.

I have colored my hair black. Can I lighten the hair with hair color product?

No. Color pigments of permanent hair color once oxidized and developed are difficult to remove from hair. It's almost impossible to lighten previously darkened hair with permanent hair color by yourself. For more information, ask for a professional colorist at a salon.

I colored my hair with Bigen Powder. Can I lighten the hair with other color products?

No. Since Bigen Powder is a permanent hair color, Bigen Powder's color pigments are difficult to remove from hair after oxidized and developed. For more information, ask for a professional colorist at a salon.

What type of shampoo and conditioner should I use after using Bigen Powder?

To protect your hair color from fading, we recommend Bigen Colorsheild Moisture Plus Shampoo and Deep Conditioner.

How long should I wait to recolor my hair after using Bigen Powder?

Wait at least two weeks to color your hair again after the use of this product.

The New Formula Is A Waste Of Money

I have used Bigen oriental black in a glass bottle for the past 20 years and recently stopped using Bigen due to a new formula in a plastic bottle. The texture is so different from the old formula, I wish to see the original Bigen back again, Is there any chance to get the old formula back again? Thank you, this is a concern, and I hope the company will consider its original formula again.

Scared to use

I used this dye as a teen and went to go back because other dyes aren't taking to untreated roots, this was the only one that worked on my natural hair.
It is no longer made in Japan but Indonesia and is now in a plastic bottle.
I trust the original but am hesitant to even try the new version.
It's my understanding, and misfortune that this was a recent change.
